In God Makes the Rivers to Flow; An Anthology of the World’s Sacred Poetry & Prose, Eknath Easwaran includes a selection from Saint Patrick entitled “Christ Be with Me.” I’ve written the following poem-like reflections inspired by this selection.
God with Me
May the strength of God pilot me,
the power of God preserve me today.
May the wisdom of God instruct me,
the eye of God watch over me,
the ear of God hear me,
the word of God give me sweet talk,
the hand of God defend me,
the way of God guide me.
—Saint Patrick
May the breath of God fill my lungs.
May the tongue of God speak through me.
May the mouth of God offer me sweet forgiveness.
May the kiss of God land on my forehead.
May the feet of God walk before me.
May the light of God illumine my path.
May the nose of God delight in my offering.
May the love of God dwell in my heart.
May the blood of God pump through my veins.
May the joy of God lift my spirits.
May the rock of God be my foundation.
May the tree of God give me shade.
May the water of God quench my thirst.
May the bread of God sate my hunger.
May the fire of God purify my heart and mind.
May the sand of God teach me abundance.
May the deer of God remind of innocence.
May the righteousness of God guide my actions.
May the lion of God find me obedient.
May the beauty of God bring me to my knees in awe.
May the sun of God grant me sustenance.
May the clouds of God grant me rain.
May the mountains of God show me glory.
May the valleys of God give me rest.
May the roads of God unfurl before me.
May the rivers of God inform my worship.
May the air of God unite me with every living soul.
May the sky of God stretch above me.
May the voice of God find a home in my ear.
