Joy and Love: Reflections on a Sacred Passage

In God Makes the Rivers to Flow; An Anthology of the World’s Sacred Poetry & Prose, Eknath Easwaran includes a selection from Swami Ramdas entitled “Divine Mystery.”  I’ve written the following poem-like reflections inspired by this selection.

Joy and Love

O Mother Divine!
Thou hast filled my entire being
With Thy power all-pervading
And hast made me Thy child—
A child born of Thy joy and Thy love—
A child ever aware of Thy glory,
Basking in the rare light of Thy grace.
—Swami Ramdas

Born in joy.  Born in love.  What are we but joy and love?

The Holy Mother in expression, the power to serve.

Looking at the Mother’s face is like looking at the sun, her light so bright, so all-pervading, her light reflected by our glowing cheeks and eyes.

Yes, we are her children.  And as her children, we are an extension of her.

And we express her like a fountain expresses the water bubbling up and over-flowing.

And we express her like fire expresses the light radiating warmth.

Her glory is the heat in our hearts.

Her grace is the blessed fruit of our actions, for which we cannot take any credit.

Her love is the earth kissing our feet.

Her joy is a dolphin leaping out of the ocean.

And O how we swim and leap like dolphins when we remember the Mother Divine, our source, our comfort.

There is nothing better than following the Mother’s lead, and letting her show us how to be.
