O Spirit Divine: Reflections on a Sacred Passage

In God Makes the Rivers to Flow; An Anthology of the World’s Sacred Poetry & Prose, Eknath Easwaran includes a selection from Swami Paramananda entitled “Source of Our Existence.”  I’ve written the following poem-like reflections inspired by this selection.

O Spirit Divine

Make us like little children, gentle, sweet and free from all blemish.
Fill our whole being with Thy Divine Light that we may know
            all things in that Light.
Bestow upon us the gift of true vision that we may love
in Thy Love and live in Thy Life.
Teach us how we may partake of Thy blessedness.
We come to Thee with humility and devotion.
Grant unto us Thy abiding protection and surround us
            with Thine all-enfolding peace.
—Swami Paramananda

Make us clean and new like fresh sheets.

Help us to drink your light like peach nectar.

Show us the love of a mother bear for her cub.

Awaken within us a fountain of abundance and joy.

We need no guns when we are fully conscious of you.

We need nothing more than to know you, for that knowledge provides us with everything we could ever need.

You are juicy as a vine-ripe strawberry.

You are sweet as the scent of vanilla.

You are warm as baking bread.

You are fierce as a stingray.

You are bigger than the infinite, older than eternity.

Your love is pure as spring water.

Your presence is an open door.

Your light is white wine.

Your creativity is the seed for every flower.

I feel like my throat is a bud longing to open and you are the sun.

I feel like my heart is a pyre waiting to be lit by your fire.

I feel like my stomach is a glass aching to be filled with living water.

I feel like my body is a screen praying for your spirit to pass through.

I feel like my soul is a sponge that wants to soak you up.

I want your touch like a lady longs for her lover.

Or like a drowning sailor longs for air.

O Spirit Divine fill me like honey fills a jar!
